The Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) has announced Roydon Tse as the winner of the 2017 Student Composition Competition. His winning composition, titled “Jest,” will be performed by MYSO on March 15 at 7:30 pm (Lewis University) and March 19 at 4 pm (Joliet Junior College) under the direction of Lawrence Sisk.
Born in Hong Kong, Tse studied in the UK for five years before completing degrees in composition at the University of British Columbia (B.Mus) and the University of Toronto (M.Mus). He is currently completing his D.M.A at the University of Toronto, and is an associate of the Canadian Music Center. A composer of symphonic, chamber and vocal works, his music has been performed internationally including Australia, China, Portugal, Canada, and the US.
Roydon is the recipient of multiple awards, including the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers in 2016 & 2015. Last year, he was awarded Washington International Composition’s grand prize, resulting in a special performance at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
“While “Jest” stands for something said or done as an amusement or a joke, the title is a play on the word “Gesture” as a repeating four note gesture pops up throughout the work,” said Roydon. “This motif was actually the activation ringtone for my cell phone for a couple of years. I decided to take this material as my inspiration and incorporate it into the piece.”
MYSO received over 70 student submissions, with entries from all around the world - from IL and Canada to Italy and Norway. The adjudication panel included Mr. Lawrence Axelrod, Dr. Christopher Coleman, Dr. Amy Dunker, Dr. Frank Felice, Dr. Hye Kyung Lee, Dr. Carleton Macy, Dr. Ed Martin, Dr. David Morneau, Dr. Paul Richards, Dr. Ingrid Stolzel, Dr. Craig Weston, and Dr. Natalie Williams.
MYSO seeks to promote and challenge talented orchestral musicians by providing an opportunity to perform repertoire of a wide variety of styles and historical periods with the goal of musical excellence. Membership in MYSO consists of junior high and high school student from Joliet and 21 surrounding communities as well as students from Lewis University and Joliet Junior College.
