Romeoville— Lewis University’s Master of Science in Computer Science with a Concentration in Cyber Security was ranked sixth among the 20 Best Online Masters in Cyber Security for 2017 by CyberSecurityDegrees.com.
For CSD’s annual ranking of the best online masters in cyber security degree programs, all online masters in cyber security and information assurance were surveyed. The 79 quality and accredited institutions have obtained the NSA/CAE (Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency) designation, the highest and most widely accepted honor related to cyber security education.
The rankings are based on data collected from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Following metrics from the IPEDS database and school websites, they were weighted to measure each cyber security program’s level of excellence according to the following three categories: Academic Quality, Affordability/ Return on Investment, and Student Satisfaction.
Lewis University offers an entirely online Master of Science in Computer Science with a Concentrations in Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and Intelligent Systems. The Cyber Security Concentration takes a technical deep dive into how to keep data private and computer systems secure. Students acquire expert knowledge into how computers represent, store, and process data and instructions so that they can understand precisely how vulnerabilities arise and, correspondingly, how they can be fixed. Students can focus on particular skill sets required of cyber security engineers, including programming, networking, penetration testing, digital forensics, and they can also learn how non-traditional computing networks, such as critical infrastructures and sensor networks, can be protected. Students also have a lot of freedom to combine their cyber security coursework with courses in the other two Concentrations, Intelligent Systems and Software Engineering. Some of the courses students take are shared with other quality graduate programs Lewis offers, including the highly popular Master of Science in Data Science, which teaches students how to collect, interpret, visualize, communicate, and secure huge sums of data; as well as the Master of Science in Information Security which takes a less technical approach to information security, replacing some of the Computer Science coursework with classes on information security policy, risk management, and governance.
