Montes Alpha M Red Wine 2016 ($80) is rated 96 points by the prestigious wine arbiter James Suckling, who presented the wine as a part of his Wines of the Andes showcase recently at Chicago's City Winery. Winemaker Aurelio Montes was on hand to personally pour this exquisite blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Cabernet Franc (10%), Merlot (5%), and Petit Verdot (5%). Aged for 18 - month in French oak barrels, the wine is a premiere example of the terrific, value priced wines that come from Chile.
The high-mountain elevation and cool ocean breezes afforded to grapes grown in Chile give winemakers a distinct advantage. Add to that the knowledge and expertise, largely founded in French winemaking techniques and you have an unmatchable mix.
The wine is delightfully complex and food friendly. It goes wonderfully with lamb or steak, particularly if they are covered with herbs and olive oil and cooked on the grill. It also goes great with a variety of cheeses and smoked and cured meats. I love it with an aged Blue Cheese, or with a mice Goat Cheese. Add some spiced olive and those nice little tart pickles and some blanched almonds and you have the makings of a delightful taste experience.
