Red Blends are among my favorites of all wines. Sometimes called Meritage, they are a blend of any number of red wine grapes from Cabernet to Petit Verdot, that create a wine that is akin to a musical ensemble, bringing out bright notes of fruit, backnotes of wildflowers, accents of baking spice and undercurrents of aged wood and smoke. One of my favorites is Dry Creek Vineyards The Mariner from Sonoma County. It’s a robust blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec Merlot and Petit Verdot, a veritable tour de force of the red grape kaleidoscope. Red Blends are perfect for summertime barbeques because they go with just about everything, particularly grilled meats of any kind. Lightly chilled, they even make a great sidekick with grilled salmon or branzino. For a party pleaser or refreshing aperitif, you can even mix them with a handful of assorted chilled sliced fruit, add your favorite sparkling water and some ice for a nice summer Sangria. Say goodbye to summer with Dry Creek Vineyards The Mariner.
