Serena Williams was talking to herself and visibly praying to the skies in the second set of her quarterfinal match against Tsvetana Pironkiva. That was before she suddenly shifted gears to display her superior athleticism. In all, she scored 20 aces, the most in a single match in eight years, to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Pironkova to move into the semifinals.
Although Arthur Ashe stadium was empty due to COVID 19 restrictions, the match was electrifying.
Serena faces the Belarus bombshell Victoria Azarenka in the same stadium Thursday night. Azarenka defeated Williams at Cincinnati and is currently World No. 16. She is the only Belarusian player to win a Grand Slam singles title. For more information, visit usopen.org.
Although Pironkova lost to Serena, her performance was no less astounding, considering that she has been away from the pro tour for three years and, like Serena, is a fairly recent mom.
“Yeah, you play a match and you go home and change diapers,” Serena said in a post-match interview, empathizing with her opponent. “It just shows how tough moms are!”
